Women seeking abortions deserve the same standard of care as a person seeking any other medical procedure. A standard of care is a treatment guideline for appropriate treatment, based not only on what is customary but also reasonable. A violation of this standard is considered a breach of duty of the medical professionals providing care.

THE TRUTH:
What you should know:
- Abortion facilities have little and sometimes no oversight in many states.
- Just because abortion is legal does not mean it is safe
- Following unsafe abortion, women may experience a range of harms that affect their quality of life and well-being, with some women even experiencing life-threatening complications.
In case Doe v Bolton, the Supreme Court stated that a woman’s right to an abortion could not be limited by the state if she was seeking it for her health and that a woman may obtain an abortion after viability, if necessary to protect her health. The Court defined “health” as follows: “… the medical judgment may be exercised in the light of all factors – physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age – relevant to the well-being of the patient. All these factors may relate to health.” It was this case and Roe Vs. Wade that made abortion legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy.
The World Health Organization created the medical abortion management manual. Their definition of health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
